Who said that Kitchens must be designed with very strict guidelines, following the rules of the "Golden Triangle", and serve only one purpose, - provide ample storage and the counter top surface for food preparation? True, majority of the Kitchen Designers are very conscious of these mandatory design requirements and try to design "by the book". Unfortunately, while paying much of their attention to the practical aspects of their creations, they forget to have FUN with it.
Kitchens are not meant to be mundane subjects !!!
We spend most of our time at home in the Kitchen; we socialize and watch the news of the day in the Kitchen. We have our desks in the Kitchen, we do our homework in the Kitchen, and we prefer to eat in the Kitchen, rather than in the formal Dining room. Having said all of the above, I can't see this very special room in our homes being just a part of the dwelling's overall square footageÖ This room deserves more: a splash of color, a combination of unusual materials and textures, different sources of light, a focal point of interest.
This particular Kitchen epitomizes much of what I believe the most important room in anyone's house should be like. No, this is in no way a standard; I don't mean to impose any style or proclaim that everyone should adapt "the open plan". I only want to prove that the multi-purpose room may have a multi-faceted appearance. The focal point in this Kitchen is the Island; it has a different appearance from all four sides. One side has an overhang and (2) stools. The front has a cook top, a built-in steamer, a built-in microwave, plus (2) drawers for pans and pots. The other side has a bar sink with a wall mounted KWC faucet and a garbage roll out. The rear of the Island faces the Dining Room, and houses a salt-water fish tank. A stainless steel hood suspended from the ceiling floats above the Island, surrounded by (4) ceiling pendant lights with yellow glass shades. The back splash has a hammered copper tile design, which complements the reddish stain of the cabinets.
The rest of the Kitchen has an "L" shaped configuration, and provides lots of counter top space. In addition to 42" Viking Refrigerator, the Customer requested an under counter 2-drawer Sub-Zero model, both located within easy reach. A 2-drawer Fisher-Paykel Dishwasher and a double bin garbage roll out are located next to the under mount stainless steel sink. Both, the large Pantry cabinet and the Wall Ovens with a warming drawer, are located on the other side of the Kitchen, next to the Breakfast Table and a wall mounted plasma TV. The tabletop is a combination of (3) separate layers of tempered º" thick glass, plus a layer of a golden yellow color film. The bottom layer was shattered to create a spider web effect. A Tiffany style ceiling lamp has the same color leaded glass as the tabletop and the ceiling pendant lights over the Island.
